Dial Up Network

Yes you can from anywhere

So for some reason you computer just crashed, at the grandparents house without an internet connection, on the road with an computer but doesn't have internet software installed so what do do? All standard store bought computers have modem cards inside (well 99%) so if you have a phone cord to plug in the modem card in the back and a standard access internet provider you can get online! All you need is your User ID, password and a local access number for your location.

Services like Earthlink, Copper, etc can be connnected using a standard Dial Up Network. A Dial Up Network is simply a generic form of connecting your computer via the modem to other computers or servers like internet providers. The only difference is that it does not carry out those smarter functions of providers Dial up software like finding access numbers and storing them with location ID in a walk through process. You just need to do it all yourself. So you will need to get your access phone number first from your provider whether by, customer service, automated phone service or online beforehand.

From your standard Windows Screen it is located in your 'Accessories' file. Start with your 'Start' button to 'Program Files' to 'Accessories' to 'Communications' and click on the 'Dial Up Network' If its not there then use your 'Find' or 'Search' function. If you used a custom Windows install and left those Accessories off your PC then you may not have it and would have to install it from your Windows CD disk.

To set up the Dial up you can click on the 'Make a new Connection' or do the same along the 'Connection' option. Follow the wizard process and fill in the blanks including location name, choose your modem (probably already selected), area code and phone number, etc and select finish. The new icon will be created and you can edit them later or add new locations to it. To make it easier to use you can copy the icon by creating a shortcut icon (left mouse click over the icon), then cut and paste it (or drag it) onto your desktop (main page when your PC starts) like any other icon. You can also drag that icon onto your quick launch bar were it will make a copy for easy access anytime while other programs are open. And thats it!
